MJCBY History

Early Jewish History in Morristown — This piece begins with the arrival of the first Sephardi Jews to North America and continues until the early 1900's, shortly before World War I.

History of the Ladies Auxillary — This article is adapted from a presentation to the Sisterhood on April 26, 2015. The story starts in the 1890s and goes through the 1990s.

Rose Haimowitz and the Thrift Shop — This is a tribute in celebration of Rose Haimowitz's remarkable dedication to MJCBY through her work with the Thrift Shop, which, under her leadership, was able to contribute $30,000/year to the shul for many years.

The Tree of Life — This piece of art [in the ??] was created by Nancy Salny to be the display for an on-going fundraising campaign where members would buy additionals leave for their branch of the tree as their families grew. Willner Chapel Windows by Robert Pinart — The Willner Chapel was renovated during the period 1986-88. As part of the renovation, the beautiful stained-glass windows were created by the internationally acclaimed glass artist, Robert Pinart. This is the story of the windows and the artist. Kol Dodi Celebrating 120 Years of Morristown Jewish Center and Glorious Jewish Music — This is a 54-minute recording of a concert at MJCBY in February, 2019.

Other Presentations

Dr. Tova Friedman: A Survivor's Talk — This presentation was made in April, 2021, in commemoration of Yom Hashoah (Holocaust Memorial Day). This nearly-two hour recording includes an introduction by Rabbi Nesson, Dr. Friedman's talk, followed by a special El Malay chanted by Cantor Onigman, a special Kaddish by Rabbi Nessn, and Q&A.

Yom Hazikaron: A Presentation by Dan Almagor — This 90-minute discussion with Dan Almagor in honor of Yom Hazikaron was hosted by MJCBY in April, 2021. He spoke about his experience as a young soldier in the Battle of Tel Saki, one of the fiercest battles of the Yom Kippur War. We honored 32 fallen Israeli heroes by reading their names and lighting candles.
