1 These changes to improve website accessibility are somewhat technical:

  1. On the web, all images have "metadata" - information about the image that is used by browsers but not displayed; one such field is called "alt text". We will ensure that all images have robust alt text descriptions so that a screen reader application can read aloud to the user what the image is about.
  2. It is considered a best practice to use two techniques to highlight hyperlinks and state in the link text what will happen when the link is selected. Our current website makes it very difficult to distinguish hyperlinks from text (text is black and the links are dark blue) and most links have one-word text that lacks context. All hyperlinks will be "decorated" with contrasting color and underscore and the link text will be more complete.
  3. Screen readers use the hierarchy of header tags: h1, h2, etc., to communicate structure, not for how they look visually. We will use all headers throughout the site hierarchically, to support the use of screen readers.
