Website User’s Guide

Introduction

  • This User's Guide was written at the conclusion of the "facelift" project, which was completed in the summer of 2024.
  • The overarching goal of the facelift was to improve the usability of the website and its appearance.
  • The design goals can be found in the Website Facelift Summary.
  • Our website will often be people's first impressions of our community. If our site does not meet the high standards that people have come to expect, it will be a turnoff.
  • This document provides information for the MJCBY staff and volunteers who have responsibilities to promote MJCBY and/or keep the website current and make enhancements.
  • Day-to-Day Care & Feeding

The target audience for this section includes:

    • The office staff who maintain MJCBY's calendar and event listings
    • Volunteers who help to keep the "upcoming events" listings current
    • Event sponsors in the community who have events to promote
    • Staff/volunteers who produce or maintain other channels of communication including: the monthy Newsletter, (bi-)weekly e-blasts, and our social media accounts

    Calendar and Events

This is a major change in how the website is organized and used. This information will be of greatest value to the Office staff and volunteers who produce the Monthly Newsletter and bi-weekly E-blasts

    WordPress Events

    • Our website is managed and displayed via WordPress (WP)
    • In WP, events are created and managed by an Events application
    • These events are displayed on the homepage below the slide carousel and available via the Events link in the main menu
    • There might also be selected events listed on specific pages, e.g., Religious School or Social Action
    • These are public events that we are promoting for our members and potential members
    • WP Events are created via the WP Dashboard > Events > New Event
    • There is an online form for anyone in the congregation to use to provide information about an event they are sponsoring/hosting. There is a link to this form via the Events main menu item. When submitted, it will go to the office for the publication of the WP Event.

    Google Calendar

    • Is no longer connected to the listing of WordPress Events
    • Is visible to all members of the congregation and staff in the Members's section of the website, requiring a login
    • Only contains internal meetings and other non-public events
